Owner Tom Sunderland started Native Edge in 2001 with just one person - himself! Since then, they've grown to become a $6 million thriving business employing over 65 outdoor living professionals.  As a primarily landscape design and construction firm, they focus on building relationships with retirement communities and mixed use commercial accounts.  Their all natural approach to plant horticulture doesn't include any spraying, and instead promotes soil nutrition and proper maintenance techniques, which led them to opening a service department 5 years ago.

Passion for People

Native Edge has never used and doesn't plan to use the H2B program as a source to recruit new employees. Instead, they have two full-time individuals who are solely focused on HR, Safety and Culture.  Their passion for finding people who love the outdoors and see a future in landscaping has required them to elevate their employee processes to provide more consistent feedback to each individual on the team as they promote a "career relationship" approach.

The Power of Place

Their unique facility features separate 1950's properties, about a 3-minute walk from one another, forming a small village. While it's not the traditional warehouse most companies see, it's located just 10 minutes from all of their clients and in the heart of potential employee residences, which made it a smart transition in 2016. The team is currently remodeling their design studio to have a congruent look as the nearby arts community.

Finding the Sweet Spot

It's easy to see that Native Edge is the leading expert for extremely large design build and construction projects by taking a look at their website.  Their process for figuring out how to profitably manage these $50,000 - $500,000 and up projects has been their secret sauce. Now they're working on bringing that same level of competency and expertise to smaller projects and their quickly growing landcare division, which is diversifying from 100% single-family residential to multifamily residential, retirement/assisted-living communities, and school campuses.
