Heaviland Landscape Management

Vista, California - September 27

Heaviland Landscape Management was founded in 1985 by current owner Tom Heaviland and his dad Ron.  Today the company has 3 branch locations in Vista, Miramar and Chula Vista, California.  Their exclusively commercial target market is split between 65% landscape management, 30% design build and install, and 5% irrigation and water management.  Their team of over 165 employees take care of prestigious accounts including the US Olympic Training Center and are frequently honored in the press locally and nationally.

Resource Management

The team at Heaviland is committed to promoting drought tolerant landscaping and efficient water management practices. As California faces consistent drought conditions, they've become known as the go-to company for reducing utility bills by providing reclaimed water solutions, implementing water-efficient landscape design, and by advising on LEED & sustainable water management.  They also have a passion for restoring sites to promote natural ecological systems and wildlife habitats.

Embracing Their People

The culture at Heaviland places a huge emphasis on their team members. They host soccer, go above and beyond when it comes to recognizing birthdays, anniversaries, babies, weddings and even have a bereavement fund in case of loss of a family member. Early in 2018 they raised money on GoFundMe to help a fellow employee whose truck was robbed of his personal lawn and landscaping equipment.

A Family Legacy Continues

Tom became President of the company when his business partner and father passed away unexpectedly in 1997.  Now, Tom's son Christian is the New Business Developer at Heaviland and exceeding sales records by leaps and bounds.  The importance of working closely together and developing a succession plan for the company is on the forefront of their minds, but can often be easily overlooked during the busy season.

My experience at Michael Hatcher and Associates for Face to Face in 2017 was fantastic.  JP Horizons did an awesome job making the day fun with learning and sharing.  Thank you for allowing me to be a small part of that.  I look forward to unpacking my notes and pulling out all the info I can - as well as attending more events next year.
